Where can you find more information on DMX 512? Where can you get a copy of the standard?

If you want a copy of the standard, you will have to buy a copy from the USITT. The standard is copyrighted and the USITT takes a dim view of anyone who puts it on line. There are number of Web pages that have information on the standard. They are not all of equal quality. A Guided Tour of DMX512 is a good practical user guide. It can be found on the ROSCO / Entertainment Technology Web site. This article is aimed at users of their IPS system but should be of use to all DMX512 users.

There is a book we recommend, Recommended Practice for DMX512, A guide for users and installers By Adam Bennette This "little white book" is the best user's guide for DMX512. It is a joint venture of PLASA (UK) and USITT (USA) and was reviewed by DMX512 equipment manufacturers worldwide. We highly recommend it.

Updating of DMX512 is underway

DMX 512 is presently undergoing an update and revision. This project is sometimes refereed to as DMX512/2000 because it is assumed that the revision will be done sometime in the year 2000. There are many rumors about what these revisions will include. Many of these rumors are false. Also while certain changes may have been proposed in current drafts there are no assurances that these changes will be in the final standard. This revision is to be carried out by the ESTA Technical Standards Program (TSP). The USITT's information page on DMX512 is the place to find the current status of DMX512.
